Tao Te Ching · Chapter Three

Original text

Do not exalt the worthy, and the people will not compete. Do not prize rare goods, and the people will not steal. Do not display what is desirable, and the heart will not be disturbed. Therefore the sage empties the mind and fills the belly, weakens ambition and strengthens the bones. He keeps the people from cunning and desire, and the clever ones have nowhere to act. Act without forcing, and nothing is left ungoverned.
