The Tao that can be spoken of is not the constant Tao. The name that can be named is not the constant name. The nameless is the beginning of heaven and earth; the named is the mother of ten thousand things. Free from desire, you see its subtlety; caught in desire, you see only its surface. These two come from the same source but are named differently. This sameness is called the mystery — mystery upon mystery, the gateway to all that is wondrous.
A reading
Laozi opens by taking away the ground under our feet. Every word we use to hold the world is already one step behind it. He is not asking you to stop thinking — he is asking you to notice that the map is not the road.
Then he does something subtle: the nameless and the named are not enemies. They are the same source seen from two sides. Stillness and appetite both belong to the Tao. Nothing here asks you to leave your life.
Try this today: for one minute, name what you are feeling without adding a judgement to it. Just the naming. Then let the naming go.
